SHOCKOE INSTITUTE PRESENTS
Unmanageable is proud to be a producing partner, alongside Founding Artistic Director Leyla McCalla, of a series of multidisciplinary conversations presented by The Shockoe Institute, a new national organization headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, dedicated to revealing the enduring impact of racial slavery on our shared American experience.
At Shockoe Institute Presents events, guests are invited to engage with historians, educators, policymakers, and creatives of all types to explore the enduring impact of racial slavery on modern American life through events, performances, and unique, thought-provoking experience.
On her role as curator of this series, Leyla McCalla says: “My work as an artist has always sought to learn about history, to try to understand its relationship to today, and to use what I’ve learned, alchemizing the lessons into songs. It is my strong belief that all art deepens our empathy and connection with one another, and I’m truly honored to have been given the opportunity to practice this as a curator at the Shockoe Institute. Our events will encompass a range of cross-disciplinary presentations: performances, readings and panel discussions from artists of all mediums that are exploring the stories that emanate from this history.”
